Head coach of Smart City Football Club, Mohammed Gafar has boasted that their victory against its arc rival, Messiah Football Club at the just concluded Jagaban Cup final was well deserved.
Smart City defeated Messiah FC 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a barren draw in regulation time in the final of the Jagaban Cup which was held recently at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos.
The four days tournament was put together by 36 Lion Investment, Diamond Sports Management, and Lagos Enigma in their support for the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of next year’s Presidential general election.
Gafar in a chat with Sports247 after the match said both teams played good football but noted that his players had the opportunity to bury the game at regulation time before it went into a penalty shootout.
“It was a sweet and well-deserved victory. Fans in Lagos know that our match against Messiah is always a rival match so beating them in the final of the Jagaban Cup is something we can celebrate about. My players gave their best. They saw many scoring chances during the match but failed to convert it. I am happy that we won them through penalties,” he said.
Messiah Coach, Tunde Olayinka disclosed that it was a good match but noted that his team was unlucky during the penalty shootout.
“I am not disappointed about the outcome or result of the game because my players did a good job. They were at their best unfortunately we lost narrowly in a penalty shootout. I congratulate our opponents for their victory and I also commend my boys for the job well done,” he added.
