Lobi Stars of Makurdi captain, Tony Agbaji has disclosed that heated criticism from their fans and the media helped the players build up their levels of determination and send Gor Mahia of Kenya packing from the CAF Champions League.
Speaking to sports247.ng against the backdrop of a 2-0 win at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu on Saturday, which took the Makurdi side into the group stage on away goals, following a 3-1 loss in the first leg, Agbaji said it was mostly because the players did not want to face their fans’ fury again.
Agbaji admitted that widespread criticism gave them the strength to work harder in ensuring they qualify for the group stage of the money-spinning elite clubs’ continental competition.
Agbaji pointed out: “We were written off after falling 3-1 in the hands of Gor Mahia in the first leg.
“However, the criticism we faced after that match played a major role in ensuring we worked harder to come out top against the Kenyans.”
