The football team of Government College Lagos (GCL) is targeting victory in the final of this year’s Lagos State Principals’ Cup.
This much was disclosed by the squad’s team manager, Emmanuel Okere, who added that The Spotless Boys are fully charged to win the final at Agege Stadium on Monday.
Okere pointed out that winning the final will be a feat not only for the college located at Eric Moore Road, Surulere but also for the entire community.
This, according to him, is sequel to the fact that they are now carrying the banner of District 4 of the state’s education board and everyone in the area has been supporting the lads’ quest for success.
Such it was on Saturday at CMS Grammar School, Bariga, where The Spotless Boys defeated District 3 via sudden death penalties to ease into Monday’s ultimate game.
It was a carnival athmosphere, as some old boys of the college, among whom are Okere and the team’s head coach, bonded together to motivate the players in achieving a resounding result.
It was singing and dancing right after the game, which they won 6-5 on penalties, following a goalless end to regulation time.
The old boys present joined sports officials from the district in singing and dancing with the players and coaches all the way back to Surulere.
“It was a day of fun and excitement,” Okere stated with delight, while giving plaudits to the entire delegation.
“The players made us all proud and we are happy for them, especially our goalkeeper and that small boy, Alex, who is the youngest player in our team.
“We also congratulate Coach Tope and his assistant as well as the sports coordinators from District 4. They camped the boys before this match and even provided a staff bus to transport us to the venue.
“I am happy that all the efforts and sacrifices from everyone were not in vain.
“Now we have to work harder in order to win the final on Monday. We lost many scoring chances in this game and almost lost on penalties after missing two kicks, but God helped us.
“I pray that things will favour us again in the final, especially as our next opponents are tougher than these ones from Lagos Island that we beat in the semi final.
“We also appeal for more support from GCL old boys and other well wishers. Thank you.”
