Former Real Madrid star Rafael Van Der Vaart has taken time to praise Super Eagles left back Calvin Bassey in Ajax Amsterdam UEFA Champions League outing this season after the game against Rangers on Tuesday.
Bassey has since become a regular for the Amsterdam-based team since he joined from Rangers. The versatile defender was in the line-up in their last Champions League group game as his side took advantage of bottom-side Rangers on Tuesday evening.
After a fantastic performance, former Dutch International, Van Der Vaart has showered praises on the Nigerian International for his exceptional effort for the team.
“Ajax is much more better now. I think Calvin Bassey plays well, he feels well at home in the center back. Maybe it’s also because Wijndal played on that side, which is a bit more dynamic” he told Ziggo Sports.
Bassey made an emotional return to the club he left for Ajax as he helped the Dutch champions get past Scottish giants Rangers. Bassey and his defensive partners did a lot of job to keep Rangers from scoring in a reasonable number of time in the game.
Steven Berghuis opened the scoring in the 4th minute with an assist from Ghanaian Mohamed Kudus. Kudus later double the lead with an Owen Wijndal assist in the 29th minute. A brace would have been for the Ghanaian but no thanks to VAR as his goal was disallowed.
James Tavemier helped Rangers pull one back in the 87th minute but the hope didn’t last long as Chico Conceicao put the final nail in the coffin to make it 3-1
Ajax’s effort was only best for a third place finish as they trail group leader Napoli and second-place Liverpool who have made it through to the round of sixteen.
