Calvin Bassey has revealed what influenced his decision to join Ajax. The Nigerian international defender completed a €23 million-plus move to Ajax from Rangers earlier this week.
Bassey signed a five-year contract with the Dutch champions, snubbing interest from Premier League clubs Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa.
“To have a club of this status, of this magnitude, looking at you is incredible,” the 22-year-old said.
“As a kid, you always dream about playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, playing in the Champions League and winning things. That is what Ajax is all about.
“They have history, and you only have to look at the amazing players who have come from this club. They have had fantastic careers, here or at other clubs, so something is right about Ajax. It just made perfect sense. When I got the call, I didn’t need to be asked twice. I had no doubt.”
Last season, Bassey helped Rangers reach the Europa League final, where they were defeated by Eintracht Frankfurt. He will now get the chance to play in the Champions League this season.
The former Leicester City youth star is also eager to add to his collection of silverware, having won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup at Ibrox.
“There is no better place to come than Ajax to learn how to play better. That’s really what attracted me. Possession game, attacking, exciting football, forward player. I like to play and I want to learn more and improve, constantly keep getting better.
“That’s why I chose this club because it is exciting. It’s an amazing club. For them to have been interested in me is crazy. My expectations are high because of the club it is.”
