Team Nigeria is fit and prepared to compete in the 2022 Commonwealth Games according to Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development.
The Commonwealth Games is scheduled to be held in Birmingham, England from 28 July to 8 August 2022.
Nigeria will be represented by 94 athletes in nine sports: athletics, wrestling, judo, para-athletics, boxing, table tennis, para-table tennis, para-powerlifting, and weightlifting.
Speaking on Thursday, July 21 at the reception of the British High Commissioner hosted in Abuja to bid farewell to the participating Nigerian athletes, Dare asserted that Team Nigeria is ready to make the nation proud at the Games. In his words as quoted by Sports247:
“Team Nigeria is fit and prepared. And the last several weeks we’ve seen Team Nigeria participate in several competitions. Of course, we had the national trials, we had the championship in Mauritius. They’re now in Oregon back to back and then the commonwealth.”
Dare also allayed worries that the athletes might be worn out from competing in other events before the Commonwealth Games. He added:
“When you have competitions like that it sharpens the skills of the athletes. But also improves their preparedness and precision as athletes. So Team Nigeria is fit, Team Nigeria is ready. The spirit of the commonwealth is alive in them and I’m sure that they will do Nigeria proud when we get to Birmingham.”
