Morocco 2022: Another Moment To Witness Agelong Continental Rivalry In Women’s AFCON Opening Group C Match

Football fans across Africa and other parts of the world will witness another biggest football rivalry in Africa international football when Nigeria’s Super Falcons begin their quest for their 10th continental title at the 12th edition of Women’s African Cup of Nations against Banyana Banyana when the tournament kickstart in Morocco from 2nd-23rd of July.

Both teams met in the final which ended in a barren draw after regulation and extra time but The Super Falcons won 4-3 on penalties to win the title in Ghana.

This is the first edition of the tournament since Super Falcons last won it in Ghana in 2018 after the 2020 edition was cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Three venues across two different cities have been confirmed to host this fourteenth edition including Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex, Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan in Morocco’s capital city of Rabat.

Super Falcons who have won 9 out of 12 editions of WAFCON including the last edition in Ghana, will begin their title defense campaign against continental arch rival, the Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the opening match of the Group C on Monday, 4th of July, 2022.

Three days later, Nigeria will face The Zebras of Botswana in their second group game and the Swallows of Burundi in the last game of the group stage on Sunday, 10th of July, 2022.

However, Super Falcons will play all their group games at the Stade Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan in Rabat, Morocco.

The tournament will also serve as the African qualifiers for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the top 4 teams will automatically qualify for the Women’s World Cup billed for Australia and New Zealand in August.
