Ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations set to kick start in Morocco on 2nd July, Africa’s football governing body, CAF has drawn a list of legends for their TV commentary team for the competition.
The 14th edition of the WAFCON which will have all its games live on the broadcast will have renowned former Indomitable Lionesses’ captain Christine Manie (Cameroon), former Banyana Banyana (South Africa) international and captain Amanda Dlamini, and former Carthage Eagles (Tunisia) Haifa Guedri and former Nigeria’s Super Falcons goalkeeper nicknamed ‘Baruwa’ Rachael Ayegba for commentary and analysis throughout the tournament.
According to CAF, the team of commentators and analysts will “form part of the build-ups and commentary for all matches.”
CAF noted in their statement that “the stellar on-site commentary and analysis team is a first in the history of the WAFCON competition and is part of CAF’s objective to enhance the quality of the TV product for the viewer, in keeping with the growing global stature of African women’s football.”
CAF’s General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba pointed out that “The viewer experience is our priority, we want women’s football in Africa to be a globally competitive television product. We are excited to welcome these stars who will be part of the CAF family. Improving the television product is one of our top priorities right now. Women’s football in Africa is on the ascendance and I am really looking forward to this competition.”
Ayegba who made her debut for the Super Falcons in 2001 had an active 11-year career where she represented Nigeria at the 2006 and 2008 WAFCON winning the title in 2006, a bronze in 2008, and also a gold medal in 2007 All Africa Games.
The former Edo Queens star also played at the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup while she played in Finland all through her club career in Europe winning 5 major trophies there.
The goalkeeper who retired from football in 2016, has a UEFA A coaching license and now works as a bus driver in London was Africa’s first female goalkeeper to win a European title.
