Rivers United are the champions of the 2021/2022 season of the Nigeria Professional Football League with four matches remaining for them to play, Sports247 can confirm.
Akwa United defeated 2nd placed Plateau United 2-1 on Saturday evening in the Matchday 35 fixture of the NPFL which leaves them 10 points adrift of Rivers United with 71 points.
However, if it happens that Rivers United eventually loses all of their four remaining games for the season, they will still be a point ahead of Plateau United with only 3 matches to be played, which makes Rivers United the new champions of the Nigerian league top division.
This is ‘The Pride of Rivers’ first Nigeria Professional Football League title since its establishment in 2016 through the merging of Sharks F.C and Dolphins F.C by the state government.
Rivers United’s best record in the league before now was a second placed finish in the 2015/2016 season of the NPFL.
