Taiwo Awoniyi has joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin for a club record fee of £17.5 m, Sports247.ng reports.
The 24-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the newly promoted Premier League club.
“I’m very excited to be here at Nottingham Forest,” said Awoniyi following his move to The City Ground. “It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League and having spoken to Steve Cooper about our ambitions and looking at Forest, with its great history, it’s a club that I want to be part of.”
Forest head coach Steve Cooper added: “There’s been a lot of interest in Taiwo from other Premier League clubs, and other clubs across Europe, so we’re delighted that he’s chosen Nottingham Forest.
“Our recruitment and coaching teams have been monitoring his progress closely over the last few months. He’s a player who we really believe in and we look forward to him going on to fulfil his potential and become a top Premier League striker with Nottingham Forest.”
Awoniyi joined Union Berlin permanently for €6.5m from Liverpool in June 2021, after spending the 2020/21 season on a season-long loan with the Bundesliga outfit.
The Nigerian international had an outstanding 2021/22 campaign, scoring 20 goals and registering 5 assists in 43 games across all competitions. He helped The Iron Ones to a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga.
Awoniyi becomes Nottingham Forest’s first signing of the current transfer window. Forest gained promotion back to the Premier League last season. The Reds would hoping Awoniyi fires them to safety in their first season back in the English top flight after a 23-year absence.
