The Super Falcons of Nigeria as so far set the pace for other african teams since the inception of African female football in the 90’s as the Nigerian side has won a record 9 times of the most prestigeous female football trophy in the continent.
Now the stage is set to get another. The camp gate of the Super Falcons of Nigeria has been thrown open for invited players pencilled down to prosecute next month’s Women African Cup of Nation slated to hold in Morocco. Head Coach Randy Waldrum had last month invited 32, out of which will be trimmed to the number required by CAF.
In an x-ray of the team in general, Media Officer of the Super Falcons has expressed great satisfaction of the quality of the Super Falcons team. Speaking from Abuja, venue of the team’s camp, Saturday evening, Tobechukwu Oluchi emphasizes that the Falcons is a blessed team which many countries in the world pray to have.
“A lot of countries are dying to have the kind of quality of players that we have. Nigeria is a blessed nation of such a huge population, and so a high number of quality players and I think we should be thankful.
Though a few of the team is made of home base players but quite a lot is made up of foreign based players from reputable teams playing week in and week out. Barcelona, Benfica, CSKA Moscow, Deportivo la Coruna, Madrid CFF, Sevilla and Athletico Madrid are among top clubs abroad that contribute to not just quality but also team dept of the Super Falcons.
“When we look at any position we have up to 2 or 3 players that can easily fill up a position. The last time star striker, Asisat Oshoala had a minor knock and could not play against the Lady Elephants, Ifeoma Onumonu, who base in the United States was there to fill her space and she leaved up to expectations.
Having had the kind of quality players in the Super Falcons, there could be a rising concern on team selection in the competition proper but Tobex assures Nigerians that the technical team is capable of utilising the star studded team to our advantage. ” The coach is happy he has abundance of talent and a number of assistants that he works with to make sure that he picks the final number of players CAF demands as we look forward to picking our 10th tittle.” She concluded.
