Nigeria’s Shot put a star, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi made obvious the difficulties foreign-based athletes like him pass through when representing Nigeria, especially here in Africa.
Chukwuebuka successfully defended his title worn in Delta State Nigeria two years ago in the African Athletics Championship in Mauritius.
The highly-rated athlete won Nigeria’s last gold medal to galvanize Nigeria’s third-place finish on the medals table. In his speech after his record-breaking throw, he admitted that it’s fantastic competing for Nigeria but difficult.
“We Take the good with the bad, do our very best. Athletics is direct competition. There are going to be difficulties but you will just face them as you can.
” Myself, for example, I saw it was raining, though we experience rain everywhere in other parts of the world, this kind of rain I saw in Mauritius, is what could lead to what we call ‘let’s call it a day to avoid injuries but that’s how God works.
Recounting his unpleasant experiences so far in the championship too and from the small island country, he continues ” It’s going to be the storm in Africa. Things like the weather, and difficulties in travel, but you just have to face them.
The 29-year-old erased his previous championship record of 21.08m set in Asaba four years ago to set a new Championship record and a season-best of 21.20m
