Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has emerged as a transfer target for FC Luzern. According to sport.ch, the Swiss Super League team is interested in luring the former Arsenal player to the Swissporarena ahead of the upcoming season.
Luzern finished ninth in the 2021/22 season and had to win a two-legged playoff against FC Schaffhausen to keep their top-flight status, and the club now wants to start building for the coming season.
The former Swiss champions have set their sights on Nwakali, who is present without a club following his release from SD Huesca in April. The 24-year-old’s contract with the Spanish Segunda Division team was terminated early due to a dispute with the club.
Nwakali rose to fame in 2015, when he captained Nigeria’s U-17 national team to the U17 FIFA World Cup title. He took home the Golden Ball Award for the competition.
The midfielder joined Arsenal in 2016. After a succession of loan spells, he left Arsenal permanently in 2019 and joined Huesca without making a single senior appearance for the English club.
He appeared in 19 games for Huesca last season. Luzern will be eager to add the Nigerian international to their ranks as they try to improve on their ninth-place finish from the previous season.
