Ahmed Musa has insisted that he has no plans to step away from international football just yet and intends to continue with the Nigeria national team at next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Musa’s inclusion in Jose Peseiro’s squad for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe has raised a few eyebrows. Earlier this year, it was rumored that the 29-year-old would leave the Super Eagles after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, for which Nigeria failed to qualify.
Musa has now addressed those claims, insisting that he is still available to represent Nigeria if he is selected. The Fatih Karagumruk winger is hoping to play in next year’s Nations Cup and help Nigeria win it. He told the media:
“I didn’t tell anyone that I am done with Super Eagles. I said I might consider retiring after the World Cup if Nigeria had qualified. The new coach has called me to come and play in the AFCON qualifiers and I cannot say no to him because it is a call to serve my country.
“AFCON is next year and I am still actively playing in Turkey if the coaches find me good enough to be at the AFCON in Ivory Coast, I will gladly go and help my country to win it. I will always honor the invitation to serve my country and give my best.”
