Victory Over CAR Wasn’t Easy, As We Were Unlucky In First Leg – Gernot Rohr

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, on Sunday afternoon, triumphed over the Les Fauves of Central Africa Republic in the matchday four of the world cup qualifiers in Duala, Cameroon.

This is the second time in three days both countries are locking horns in the group stage of the 2022 world cup qualifiers. It could be recalled that the Super Eagles failed to score a goal or even secure a point in the first leg here in Nigeria, no thanks to a late winner from CAR forward Karl Namnganda after Leon Balogun failed to properly clear a goal-bound ball out of danger.

The Gernot Rohr’s tutored Nigerian side has come under fire from fans, journalists, and ex-internationals recently after their dismal performance and disappointing loss to CAR in Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos. Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh described the team’s performance as shameful and the most disgraceful since the history of Nigerian football. Segun Odegbami on the other hand believed that it was a total letdown of the country as the CAR side has little or no pedigree in African or world football. Oliseh added that Nigeria should let the German tactician go as he has not brought anything to Nigerian football since his appointment as coach of the Super Eagles.

On the quest to redeeming his image, Rohr led his team to a 2-0 win in Duala, Cameroon, over CAR. Indeed It was a match of redemption as first leg flop, Leon Balogun open scoring in the 29th minute with a volley. Napoli wonder boy, Victor Osimhen doubled the lead in the extra time of the first half, to keep the Central African side two steps behind reach. Both goals came in the first half as those were enough to seal the three-point needed to still be on top of the Group C table.

Speaking to Sports247, Coach Gernot Rohr said the team took revenge as they were unlucky in the first leg and it’s not easy to beat the Central Africa Republic. “It’s time to look into the next game in November … thanks to the fans as we will never give up. The team has tried even though they have made some mistakes. They are a young team.” He concluded.
