Nigerian Players Rule Badminton Championship In Zambia

Nigeria’s team to the Zambia International Badminton Championship got top spot overall, with two gold and two silver medals in the competition that ran from November 29 to December 2 in Lusaka.

 

 

Sports247.ng reports that Nigeria got a haul of silver medals, but won gold in women singles with Dorcas Ajoke Adesokan beating the hosts’ player, Ogar Siamupangila 21-17, 21-15.

In the Mixed Doubles, Adesokan partnered Anu Opeyori to defeat Bahaedeen Ahmed and Domou Amro of Jordan 21-18, 23-21.

Nigeria’s’ first silver medal came in men’s singles, as Opeyori lost 21-10, 23-21 to Ade Resky Diwicahyo of Azerbaijan.

The second was in men’s doubles as the duo of Ade Resky Diwicahyo and Azmy Qowimuramadhon of Azerbaijan defeated Godwin Olofua and Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori 21-19,16-21,21-17.

Azerbaijan finished second overall with 2 gold medals while host, Zambia were third with 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals.

In his reaction, the president of Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Francis Orbih said the win placed the country as a leader in sports.

Orbih further stated that the value to the country and players cannot be underestimated as it.

He said it stimulates economic activities, job creation and education as well as expose players to new societies as they travel for tournaments.

Orbih stressed: “We are committed to ensuring that badminton drives sustainable growth as its contribution to nation building.”
