A tough matchday five-fixture, looked like they were set for their first loss but however, they can back to level matters 2-2 against a difficult Iganmu FC side to remain top of their group table and unbeaten in the Nationwide League One so far with 13points from fifteen, dropping points for the first time.
Coach of the side, Abiodun Obafemi (MON) who is a former Nigerian International and Olympic Gold medalist told Sports247 about the key to what works for his side. “Destiny, hard work, and prayer,” he said were the things that make the teamwork.
Speaking on the game with Iganmu the gaffer said, “It was really energy-zapping, we knew it would be as we watched our opponents last game and we knew we were up for a good fight, so we were really ready for them and we were not surprised.”
His side went down 2-1 and it was already looking like Iganmu FC was going to be the team to land the first blow and hand the Destiny Boys their first defeat in the league but coach Abiodun explained that he remained positive and unfazed.
“I knew we couldn’t lose because I had confidence in my team. We didn’t have enough preparation before the tournament, we only had one full training which is somewhat a secret that many people don’t know until now. This was because we lost our chairman and we really didn’t have time for anything, so we gathered ourselves in three to four days, had one training session and we came here,” he said.
The death of their chairman, coach Abiodun explained is the motivating factor behind their performances so far in the league. “That is the motivation I must confess. Our chairman lived for football so whenever we remember him we know we cannot afford to disappoint or let down his memory,” Abiodun explained.
The coach was asked if his side were ready to play in the Nigeria National League, also considering the financial implications and expenses. “I think we’re just four players away from having a dream team. I’m satisfied with the players I have because I demand a hundred percent from them and that’s what they give me. Sometimes you can’t play pretty so o expect them to be gritty,” the coach said.
“There are a lot of sponsors waiting on the way. I really thank the people who pull their resources together to keep this team afloat, they’re ready,” he added.
