Dennis scored the second goal of the night to put Cologne 2-0 up inside 22 minutes but Jahn Regensburg fought back to level the score before the interval.
With 11 minutes left on the clock, Dennis was presented with the opportunity to put Cologne back ahead from the penalty spot.
His effort was saved which proved costly as the game headed to extra time.
