JITTERS AND DIFFERENT TURF: The Bane Of The Golden Eaglets So Far

By Bamisebi Samuel

Nigerian U17 side, the Golden Eaglets, face elimination from the ongoing U17 WAFU B Championship after failing to keep their lead against Ghana and ending the game with a point apiece. The golden eaglets lost their first game of the championship 1-0 to Ivory Coast who are already through to the semi-finals.

Coach of the Golden Eaglets, Fatai Amoo, in an interview with Sports247 said the players were jittery in the first game but performed better in the 2nd game despite being limited by the type of turf they played on. “Actually, the first game we played, the boys were jittery, stage freight, the first time of them coming out to play and also, all three months of training, all along they had been working on artificial turf” coach Fatai Amoo said.

The coach also stated clearly that he was delighted with the draw against Ghana and he felt the lads came out to play right from the start and the boys showed they could really play. “Sincerely we had the upper hand in terms of chances created…and if they had won, it would not have been by fluke or by luck but by the effort, the boys put up in this game,” the gaffer said.

The Golden Eaglets’ chances of qualifying now lie on the outcome of the final group game between Ivory Coast (on 3pts) and Ghana (1pt). It’s a group made up of three teams and Nigeria ended with 1pts from two games. A draw or a win for Ghana simply sends the Golden eagles home from the championship. They will be hoping Ivory Coast defeats Ghana by 2 goals or more in order to progress to the next stage
