Nabil Yarou scored on his Nigeria Professional Football League debut to earn Enyimba the points 1-0 win against a determined Wikki Tourists at the Enyimba Stadium on Sunday evening.
Yarou was handed a start following a stellar performance in the Champions League in midweek, and the center-back did not hesitate to make his mark when he headed in the winner midway in the first half.
Despite a frenetic approach from both sides, the game’s first big chance only arrived in the 24th minute when Cyril Olisema’s volley bounced off the upright and was cleared for a corner.
It was from the resultant corner kick that Yarou pounced, finding space in the box to head Stanley Okorom’s measured cross beyond the Wikki keeper, Stanley Nwabali.
The sweet partnership between Olisema and Victor Mbaoma appeared to have paid off toward the hour when the former set up the latter, but the hosts were again denied by the upright.
Nasser Jibrin’s introduction for Wikki added some spark to their attacking play, but Enyimba held on to ensure a perfect start to the season with six points from two matches.
