Ekiti State Governor John Kayode Fayemi has promised to support the management of the state’s owned football team, Ekiti United achieve a premier league side status.
Fayemi made this remark while responding to probings by journalists on the government’s plans to develop sports in the state, as well as the provision of sports facilities.
There has been complaints by sports loving youths in the state concerning the seeming nonchalance of the state government to take youth engagement and empowerment through sports development and provision of sports facilities seriously.
Reacting to the dire needs to develop sports in the state, Fayemi recalled that he established Ekiti United during his first time as the state’s governor.
” I was responsible for the creation of Ekiti United. And I believe it should be in the premier league now. Now that you have challenged me, I want to say to you that in the next two years, Ekiti United will be in the premier league.
” In terms of developing grassroots sports, I know we can do a lot more. We’ve had stellar performances in sports in Ekiti State. You recall that when I came back, I reintroduced the Principal’s cup, which is to help discover young talents.
” However, we’re committed to supporting sports development in the state,” Gov. Fayemi stated conclusively.
