The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) at the weekend congratulated Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki on his re-election at the just concluded gubernatorial elections, saying the victory was a result of his enchanting, endearing, empowerment and youth-oriented programmes in his first term in office.
In a message signed by its Chairperson, Aisha Falode, the NWFL recalled, “the uncommon and unwavering interest the governor and his deputy” showed in the programmes of the league body, as well as the height the governor has taken the state-own women team, Edo Queens in women football.
“In 2017, the governor and his deputy, Comrade Phillip Shaibu, welcomed us warmly when he hosted and bankrolled the NWFL Super Four Championship at the now refurbished Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City and that was barely a year upon coming to the office. The memories are still fresh how he and his deputy worked tirelessly to ensure the event was a huge success.“The governor has gone ahead to do what is unprecedented in the men dominated society by putting in place a parity of pay package between the state’s men football team, Bendel Insurance FC and the women’s counterparts, Edo Queens FC.
“Aside pay parity, the women team have a befitting and well-equipped camp and playing turf at the state-of-the-art edifice, Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. Their welfare programme is top-notch and the envy of other clubs in the country.
“The governor just in the run-up to the Edo State gubernatorial polls welcomed warmly the league body to their annual general meeting with all the cares and trappings to ensure a successful congress.
“The governor has never stopped listening to the league body at any time the body called upon him for one form of assistance or another. And that is why the league body’s joy knew no bound on his re-election.
“We are more than ever confident and convinced that the next four years will be impactful and will further open more visas for collaborative programmes.
“The NWFL and women football consider your re-election as a watershed for the league body and together we are the greatest winners,” said Falode.
