” I Realized God Has Destined Me To Be A Footballer “
Emmanuel An Inspiration To Nigerian Youths
Adebayor was born on the 26th day of February 1984 in Lome, Togo.
He was born to his father, Shadrach Adebayo Adeyi and mother, Hajia Adebayor.
Adebayor could not walk for the first four years of his life. His mother struggled by
taking poor Adebayor around West Africa looking for a cure for his leg issue which
was found.
Adebayor then spoke about his ‘miracle’ saying, “… I was in the church laying
down and, around nine or ten o’clock on a Sunday morning, I could hear children
playing outside.
Suddenly somebody kicked a ball into the church. And the first
person to stand up and run was me because I wanted to get that ball.
This was
when I saw my miracle. A day I realized God has destined me to be a footballer “
Adebayor enrolled at his country’s local OC Agaza in Togo where he rose up the
ranks. He was spotted by Metz Scout, Francis De Taddeo during a youth
tournament and was subsequently brought to France.
The rest, as they say, is
now history.
Adebayor’s father hails from a little village called Igbaye in ‘Odo Otin Local
Government
Area of Osun State, Nigeria.
His father Shadrack Adebayor Adeyi died in 2005,
leaving behind his mother, Hajia Adebayor. His mother is from a neighbouring
town called Ekusa.
Emmanuel has three brothers and three sisters. He is closest to one of his sisters,
Iyabo. His younger brother’s name is Rotimi Adebayor.
The remaining two sisters
are Lucia Adebayor (sister), Maggie Adebayor (sister). Peter Adebayor is his late
brother.
The gifted attacker was named Africa’s top player for 2008 at an awards
ceremony hosted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Adebayor beat
out nominees Mohamed Aboutrika of Egypt and Ghana’s Michael Essien in a vote
that saw the national team coaches of CAF’s 54 member-nations votings.
He was accompanied by his mother at the awards ceremony, where he received a
crystal trophy and a $20,000 prize. He was the first Togolese player to be
recognised as Africa’s best player.
Adebayor is a strong donor to his native country in Africa
