In celebrating the life of former Nigeria Super Eagles striker and the team’s highest goal scorer, Rashidi Yekini who passed away in 2012, the President of the Authentic Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Abayomi Ogunjimi has described the late player as a legend and an icon.
In a chat with sports247, Ogunjimi who commiserated with the player’s family and football family said “I want to celebrate a father, an icon, a legend of the Nigerian football.”
“He has won lots of individual awards and led the national team to glory, so he deserves to be celebrated. I hope we find a striker who can replicate what he did for us.”, He added.
Rashidi Yekini scored Nigeria’s first goal at the FIFA World Cup in 1994 and was the highest goal scorer at the 1994 AFCON which Nigeria won.
Yekini played in the local legaue with UNTL Kaduna, 3SC, Abiola Babes, before moving out of the country to Cote D’Ivoire and Portugal.
He won the African best player award in 1993 and also highest goal scorer award in Portugal.
Yekini holds the highest goal scorer of the Super Eagles record after he netted 37 times in 58 appearances.
