Innocent Egbunike, Nigerian athletics veteran legend and Coach has revealed the need to discover youths with talents at a very young age citing that Nigeria have lost the touch of developing athletes from elementary school level, interhouse sports, National high school meets, Sports Festival while imploring the need to have officials with great compassion for track and field and a desire to want the athletes to succeed.
Innocent made this known in a question and answer online platform as he enjoined that coaching is a ministry while revealing his mistakes and goal is to not let any athlete he coach make the same mistakes ” he once made as a father’s dream is to see his children do better than he did.”
“We have the talents and I see a glimmer of hope in the future, we just need to plan ahead. A failure to plan is a plan to fain”
“We need to brainstorm what on what worked in the past and what didn’t and then bring in a few good men and women to lead the way in developing a 10 year plan moving forward. (Individuals that are dedicated and determined to see Nigeria succeed. We have a sea of talents, there is enough Chidi Imoh, Fatima Olukoju, Chioma Ajunwa, Blessing Okagbare and the list goes on out there ready to be discovered”, he encouraged.
“I started with soccer, and I believe I would have done well in soccer as well. I liked track better because it is an individual sport with not too much politics. It’s the individual athlete against the stop watch”, he remarked.
