ABUJA 2020: NIGERIA WIN BIG AT PARA POWERLIFTING WORLD CUP

The Para Power lifting World Cup came to an end at the international conference centre, Abuja today after an eventful three days.

The world cup hosted in Africa for the first time ended with the host, Nigeria claiming a total of 45 medals in both senior and junior categories of the tournament as the team won in every event.

In what serves as a qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics games, team Nigeria will be having more than enough contingent at the tournament in August as most of the para lifters qualified in style.

Among the big winners are Rio 2016 GOLD medallist, Paul Kehinde who won gold at the men’s Up to 65kg category after a successful lift of 194kg and Latifat Tijani who set a new African record after she lifted 105kg, 110kg which became an African record, then broke the record after lifting 112kg of weight.

Daniel Omogbai and Uhunoma Emwiobaiwi rounded off the medal winning on match day three after bronze and gold wins in the Men’s up to 107kg and Men’s over 107kg respectively.

A total of 13 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 7 bronze medals make up 28 medals that won in the senior category while 13 gold medals, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals were won in the junior category to take Team Nigeria’s total medals to 45.
