The four-day sporting programme of the South-East Zonal Elimination has come to a crescendo with TEAM ANAMBRA Male and Female sides qualifying for all the events it entered for in a resounding manner.
The zonal elimination which serves as a qualifier for the upcoming 5th National Youth Games, saw the Tony Oli’s led Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ANSDC) with the approval of His Excellency Chief Willie Obiano hosting the five states of the zone in a colourful and keenly contested sporting events with Anambra making history and surely writing its name in the sands of time.
It is expected that TEAM ANAMBRA athletes numbering over 400 with its team officials will embark on a one-week camping and intensive training from the 30th of August 2019 for the main event coming up from the 7th to the 17th of September in far away Ilorin, Capital of Kwara State.
To get to this stage, TEAM ANAMBRA coasted through in six of the sporting events it entered for at the Zonal Elimination with the breakdown as follows:
VOLLEYBALL:
The Anambra Male side saw off their Imo Counterparts in the finals by 2 sets to nil (25-12, 25-17) while the Female side emerged tops in the final game seeing off Abia also by 2 sets to nil (25-10, 25-8).
BEACH VOLLEYBALL:
The Anambra Male and Female teams will have full representation in Ilorin for this event.
HANDBALL:
Team Anambra boys won their final match by a scoreline of 12-9 against Abia, with the Female side narrowly losing by 16-12 also to their Abia based folks.
BASKETBALL:
The male side defeated Team Imo in the finals while their female side where victorious also by defeating the Abia girls.
CRICKET:
The male team saw off Team Ebonyi with 30 runs for 0 wickets after 1.2 overs, while the female team held their nerves to qualify for the 5th National Youth Games finishing as runners-up despite losing in the finals to Ebonyi with 16 wickets.
FOOTBALL:
The climax of it all was the football event at the Tansi International College Okpuno as all the athletes, officials and sports administrators were there to cheer the boys who did not disappoint as they obliterated the Abia boys 5-0 at the end of regulation time to ensure that their place for Ilorin is sealed, the female team had earlier booked their place in the finals defeating Imo by 2-0.
With the zonal elimination now concluded, TEAM ANAMBRA are expected to storm Kwara State for the 5th National Youth Games and will be featuring in over 15 events ranging from team sports, combat sports, board games and Track/field events.
