The League Management Company have announced that newly wedded Akwa United striker, Mfon Udoh has lost the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Golden Boot award to Nasarawa United striker, Sunusi Ibrahim.
Both Udoh and Sunusi were tied on 10 goals after the completion of the 2018/2019 regular season and LMC have declared the latter the winner of the award after reviewing the league’s rule.
“The League Management Company relied on the provision in Rule A9.4, A9.5-2 which stipulates considerations to determine the lead scorer in the event of a tie of two or more players to arrive at the decision,” the LMC said.
“Rule A9.5 states that if two players or more score the same number of goals, the next thing to consider as listed in Rule A9.5.1 is the player with the least goals from the penalty spots should take the award.
“But in this case, both players scored two goals each from the spot for their respective club sides, which leads to the consideration of Rule A9.5.2, which states that the player with the best disciplinary records in terms of the least number of yellow cards and red cards received will be declared the highest goal scorer for the season.
“On this note, Sunusi emerges as the highest goal-scorer for the just-concluded season ahead of Udoh.”
Udoh’s Akwa United will compete for the title when the Super Six playoff kick-start in Lagos on Tuesday, while Sunusi’s Nasarawa United narrowly missed out to FC Ifeanyi Ubah in Group B of the abridged version of the league.
