The Flying Eagles’ World Cup campaign came to an end on Monday after they were defeated 2-1 by an Amadou Sagna inspired Senegal side – who booked the quarter-final ticket.
Goals from Sagna and Ibrahima Niane in the first half set the Young Lions of Teranga flying, with Aniekeme Okon’s effort for the Flying Eagles serving only as a mere consolation.
Sagna scored his fourth goal of the tournament in the 36th minute to put Senegal ahead against the run of play before Niane doubled the lead just before halftime when he turned in Alpha Diounkou’s cross.
Paul Aigbogun’s charges pressed for goals in the second half and halved the deficit five minutes after the restart when Okon deflected Isaac Makanjuola’s free-kick past Dialy Ndiaye.
The team pushed for an equalizer but couldn’t get one as they missed a couple of half chances.
Senegal will now face the winner of the South Korea vs Japan game in the quarter-final.
