University of Lagos vice-chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe has inaugurated 14 sub-committees for the institution’s effort at pulling off a successful hosting of the 2019 Nigeria Universities Games (NUGA).
Ogundipe said during the inauguration ceremony at Senate Chambers of UNILAG that the institution is thinking of the best, and charged the sub-committee members to ensure they measure up to global standards.
Sports247.ng further gathered that the VC, who is also chairman of the local organising committee, urged the committee members to ensure the institution’s facilities are upgraded.
Ogundipe stated further that two LOCs would be set up for the event: one for the hosting and the other to ensure Team UNILAG produce athletes that will excel at the events.
He said the Ivy Tower will go on break during the event to ensure over 10,000 athletes and officials are properly accommodated, and added that UNILAG aim to use facilities in the state during the sports fiesta.
“My vision for the Games is to make it different in terms of facilities, participation, officiating and making sure that athletes and officials have a safe environment to compete. I want it to be the best NUGA Games ever.
“Lagos is blessed with various sports facilities including those owned by the Federal Government, the state and institutions. We are already in talks to make use of them.”
LOC secretary, Dr Joseph Awoyinfa, said they have started preparations, which include international exposure for athletes and officials, as well as placement of facilities to get the best of NUGA for the institution.
The sub-committees are Accreditation/Documentation, Transport, Publicity/Media, Technical, Security, Environmental/Commercial Activities, NUGA Forum, Medical, Accommodation, Ceremonial, Finance, LOC Secretariat, Facilities and Team UNILAG Participation.
