Speaking from the team’s base in Cairo, the soft-spoken attacking midfielder, Mathew Kingsley  shared his joy over being included in the squad, while affirming the team’s preparedness ahead of their opening match against Tunisia on May 1st.

“It’s certainly a thing of joy to represent your country in such a prestigious competition,” Awodi said. “I can’t express how excited I am, and I’m confident our team will do well in the tournament.”

Awodi, who plays his club football with Kings FC, is among the 24-man squad named by Head Coach Aliyu Zubair for the AFCON U20 tournament, which runs from April 27 to May 18, 2025.

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are one of the most successful teams in the history of the U-20 AFCON, having won the title seven times—the most by any nation.

The team has also consistently served as a platform for grooming talents who go on to shine at the senior national level and on the global stage.

As the Flying Eagles kick off their campaign against Tunisia at the 30th June Stadium in Cairo, expectations remain high for the team to add another chapter to Nigeria’s rich legacy at the tournament.
