The two countries joined Nigeria to officially expressed interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games by submitting their bids before the March 31 deadline set by Commonwealth Sport.
Nigeria’s Bid, to Host Historic Games
The Nigerian Olympic Committee submitted its Expression of Interest (EOI) on March 28, with spokesperson Tony Nezianya confirming a proposed bid from Abuja.
“A successful bid would showcase Nigeria’s development and readiness on the global stage,” Nezianya said.
Abuja previously hosted the 2003 African Games and attempted to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, but lost to Glasgow, Scotland.
Canada’s Bid
Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) submitted its EOI, backed by the federal government, four provincial governments, and Indigenous communities.
The proposal, dubbed “United Canada 2030,” outlines support from Manitoba, Newfoundland & Labrador, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island.
The bid aims to distribute events across multiple provinces, managing costs.
India’s Bid
India has also submitted an EOI, confirmed by Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha.
This move is part of India’s broader strategy to host major global sporting events, including potential bids for the 2030 Youth Olympic Games and the 2036 Summer Olympics.
A New Era for the Commonwealth Games
Under a new framework, future bids will be more flexible, allowing host nations to tailor sports programs, venues, and event logistics to reduce costs.
Bidding nations have until August 31, 2025, to submit full proposals.
The final host will be selected by member vote at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in November 2025.
