Former Super Eagles international Abiodun Obafemi has lambasted the persistent influence of powerful football agents and administrators in the selection process, warning that their interference undermines team integrity.
Speaking ahead of the World Cup qualifiers, Obafemi emphasized that head coach Eric Sekou Chelle faces a significant gamble and must be given full control over player selection to build a squad capable of making Nigeria proud.

Obafemi expressed his frustration, remarking, “It will continue to be the case until kingdom come. It’s a recurring issue from the very beginning. I’m not there to witness every instance, but it’s always the same story—people in the corridors of power believe that because many of these influential agents manage one or another player, their preferences should dictate selections. I’m telling you the naked truth. They push for their players to be on the team, and that has been a constant interference.”
He stressed that while external influences have long plagued Nigerian football, the ultimate responsibility lies with the head coach. “The ball is in the coach’s court now, and it’s a huge gamble. If his selections work, that’s fine, but if not, it will be disastrous for the country. We must give Coach Chelle a free hand to choose the players he believes will do Nigeria proud,” Obafemi asserted.
Obafemi’s remarks come amid growing calls for a more transparent and merit-based selection process, as stakeholders increasingly demand that the national team be built on performance and potential rather than external pressures. His call for full coaching autonomy reflects a broader desire for reforms that can help restore confidence in the Super Eagles’ campaign on the international stage.
