The just-concluded National Open Armwrestling Championship in Ibadan witnessed the emergence of a new star as Afeniforo Funke shocked the competition, winning two gold medals in her first-ever Armwrestling contest.
Afeniforo Funke , who had never competed before, entered the championship as a newcomer but left as a champion, defeating an African titleholder in the process. Her journey into the sport was unexpected, as she initially focused on fitness and muscle building before her coach saw her potential.
“I just love working out because I like looking muscular, but my coach saw my strength and encouraged me to try Armwrestling,” Funke revealed.
Despite her inexperience, she remained confident while battling first-time nerves. “To be honest, I was really nervous because it was my first time, and I didn’t want to underestimate my opponents. But at the same time, I believed I could do it,” she said.
Her rigorous training and the guidance of her coach helped her dominate the competition. “With the help of my coach and consistent training, I was able to achieve this. I faced no real challenges, thanks to God and what I learned from my coach,” she added.
Funke’s triumph has inspired those around her, with her family and supporters celebrating her unexpected rise. “They were very excited and hope for more achievements from me,” she said. Looking ahead, she is determined to take her career to greater heights.
“I should finish what I started! I hope to take it to the next level with my accomplishments,” she declared. With her remarkable debut, Afeniforo Funke has proven that she is a name to watch in Nigerian Armwrestling.
