Onyedika, returning from injury, was named in the starting lineup but couldn’t prevent his side from suffering a 3-1 home defeat on Tuesday.
This marks only the second time Aston Villa has defeated a Belgian club in UEFA competition, with their previous victory being a 1-0 win over Anderlecht in the 1982 European Cup semi-finals, a tournament they went on to win.
Reflecting on the loss, Onyedika told UEFA.com:
“The result makes things difficult for us, but nothing is impossible. We have to believe in ourselves because anything can happen.
“In this competition, you must always be at your best, ready for every moment and every match. We have worked hard for this, and we gave our best.
“It was a tough way to end the game. The result was going in our favor at some point, so it was hard to take.”
Club Brugge will look to overturn the deficit when they face Aston Villa in the return leg at Villa Park next Wednesday.
