FC Bako Triumphs Over Defending Champions Kogi Central FC to Claim 2025 Kogi State President Federation Cup

FC Bako secured a hard-fought victory over defending champions Kogi Central FC with two second-half goals to lift the 2025 Kogi State President Federation Cup at the Lokoja Confluence Stadium Complex on Saturday.

Both teams entered the final full of confidence after their impressive semi-final performances, determined to claim the prestigious title and earn the right to represent Kogi State at the National Playoffs. The match lived up to expectations, delivering an intense and skillful display that thrilled the packed stadium.

The first half was action-packed, with both sides creating scoring opportunities but failing to convert due to poor finishing. FC Bako’s goalkeeper, Abdul Sebogo Kabir, proved instrumental, pulling off crucial saves to deny Kogi Central FC’s aggressive attacking front.

The turning point came in the 72nd minute when Kogi Central FC was reduced to ten men following Onumoko Mohammed’s red card for a reckless tackle. Despite appeals from his team, the referee stood firm on his decision.

FC Bako capitalized on their numerical advantage, breaking the deadlock with a scrappy goal inside Kogi Central’s penalty area. However, the defending champions responded quickly, equalizing just three minutes later, making the game even more intense as both sides pushed for a winner to avoid a penalty shootout.

The decisive goal arrived in the 76th minute, with FC Bako reclaiming the lead. Kogi Central FC fought hard to level the score again, but FC Bako’s defense, led by a rock-solid Daniel Orakpo and the outstanding goalkeeping of Kabir, held firm until the final whistle.

A delighted Coach Anthony Wilson credited his team’s confidence, determination, and resilience for their success. He also praised the Kogi State Football Association for its excellent organization and vowed to make the state proud at the national level.

Kogi State FA Chairman, Mallam Hassan Wada, who witnessed the match alongside dignitaries including Kogi United FC Chairman, Hon. Abdulmalik Isah, described the final as thrilling and filled with promising talent. He pledged to facilitate trials for standout players with junior national teams.

“I congratulate both teams for their spirited performances and assure football lovers in Kogi that future editions will be even better. Our governor, Alhaji Usman Ododo, has promised to begin stadium renovations in phases, starting with the football pitch, dressing rooms, and administrative block,” Wada stated.

He also urged Kogites, especially football enthusiasts, to continue supporting the FA’s initiatives to elevate the sport in the state.

For the second consecutive year, both FC Bako and Kogi Central FC will represent Kogi State at the National Playoffs of the President Federation Cup later this year.
