Rena Wakama Named Best Basketball Coach by ANOCA After Historic Olympic Performance

The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) has honored Rena Wakama, 33, as the Best Basketball Coach following her remarkable leadership at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

In an official invitation from ANOCA President Mustafa Berraf, relayed through Engr. Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Wakama has been invited as a distinguished guest to receive her award. She will be accommodated at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Cheraga Towers, Algiers.

“I am honored to inform you that, alongside this important assembly, an award ceremony will be held to recognize outstanding African sports personalities who have excelled both continentally and globally,” the letter stated.

Wakama made history by guiding Nigeria’s D’Tigress to the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics, securing an 8th place finish—the country’s highest Olympic ranking in basketball to date. The team recorded notable victories, including a 75-62 win over Australia and a 79-70 triumph against Canada.

Despite a hard-fought 88-74 loss to the United States in the quarterfinals, the team’s performance remains the best by any Nigerian basketball team—male or female—at the Olympics.

The ANOCA Elective General Assembly, where the award ceremony will take place, is scheduled for March 15–17, 2025.
