During the visit, the FCT Badminton Chairman, Comptroller Usman Bappa (Rtd), emphasized the need for collaboration with the Indian Embassy and the Indian community in Nigeria to enhance the development of badminton.
He took the opportunity to brief Mr. Agrawal on the board’s plans to organize a competition for both in-school and out-of-school indigent children, aimed at fostering grassroots participation in the sport. Additionally, he highlighted the ongoing Area Councils Badminton Cup, which will culminate in the prestigious Nyesom Wike Tournament.
Chairman Usman Bappa also shared details about an upcoming event, the Asian Badminton Cup, which will involve various Asian communities, not just the Indian community.
This tournament is designed to honor the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, with the Indian community playing a key role in its success.
He further noted that the board is committed to equipping over 45 badminton clubs across the FCT while ensuring that both players and officials receive regular training sessions.
However, he appealed for support in providing much-needed equipment, as the current economic situation has made it difficult for players to afford them.
In response, Mr. Pramod Kumar Agrawal assured the board of the Indian Embassy’s willingness to support the growth of badminton in the FCT. He praised the initiative to include the Indian and broader Asian communities in competitions, stating that it would contribute to increased participation and development of the sport in the region.
