NWFL 2025: Remo Stars Ladies’ Coach Wemimo Matthew Talks Tough – ‘We’re Determined To Keep Winning All Our Matches This Season’

Remo Stars Ladies of Ikenne coach Wemimo Matthew has declared that she wants to ensure that her team does not lose any match this season in the Nigeria Women Football (NWFL).

A 4-1 win against Heartland Queens of Owerri during the week meant that Matthew’s team have dropped just a point (from a 1-1 draw away to Edo Queens of Benin City) since the beginning of the current campaign, and she insists they will now keep on winning until the season ends.

A goal each by Kafayat Bashiru and Deborah Kehinde, plus two from Bolaji Olamide ensured another win for Wemimo’s team and they stayed top of the log, but she admitted it was not an easy thing to achieve.

Wemimo, who was on Friday named NWFL coach of the month for January, recounted: “It wasn’t easy, because we played against a very good team. In the first half, they gave us a very tough fight. We scored and they equalised, but when we came out for the second half, we were able to get it right. It wasn’t easy. It was a hard one, but we won.”

The exuberant lady gaffer then explained the strategy she employed after Heartland initially equalised through Monica Matthew in the 35th minute, saying all she did was to psyche up her players and restate to them how important victory was for their aspirations in the season.

Wemimo disclosed, “After the first half, I had to let my players know that this game was very, very important to us. We had been missing a lot of chances, but we needed to keep our image up by scoring goals.

So, from the beginning of the second half, they just gave their best till the end. They went there, and they were able to calm down … unlike in the first half, when anxiety was there. I told them, ‘You must calm down for you to put the ball in the net.’ When they did it, the goals opened.”

She concluded with a declaration that Remo Stars Ladies are now gunning for a ticket into the NWFL Super-6 and then clinch the league trophy, as they aim to finally consolidate on many giant strides taken since the inception of the club owned by Honourable Kunle Soname.

“The team has come to stay, Remo Stars Ladies. Our desire from the beginning of this season is for us to win all our matches. After four matches, we’ve not lost any, and we still believe we can win more,” Wemimo boasted.
