During a courtesy visit to NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko on Thursday, AFFAN Chairperson Dr. Toyin Aluko reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting female athletes and increasing their visibility.
She highlighted that the defunct Ministry of Sports Development had previously recognized AFFAN and approved its inclusion in National Sports Federations, with elections scheduled after the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Dr. Aluko emphasized the need to inspire young girls by demonstrating that success in both sports and academics is achievable. She called on the NSC to provide a platform for AFFAN to engage with sports camps and competitions to safeguard female athletes from abuse.
Additionally, AFFAN appealed to the NSC to sponsor retired and ageing female athletes for coaching courses, both locally and internationally, to bridge the gap in female coaches and referees.
In response, NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko assured AFFAN of the Commission’s commitment to their inclusion in National Sports Federations and encouraged further collaboration ahead of the upcoming elections. He also acknowledged the crucial role of female athletes in securing Olympic medals for Nigeria and pledged the NSC’s full support for AFFAN’s initiatives.
Dikko further announced plans to reactivate the Commission’s Zonal Offices to identify and develop talent nationwide.
