The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Distinguished Senator Monday Okpevbolo, has officially inaugurated chairmen and members of 37 newly reconstituted Sporting Associations in the state.
This move, approved by the Governor of Edo State, aims to revamp and energize the state’s sports sector by attracting sustainable sponsorship and fostering industry growth.
Speaking at the event, the Sports Commission Chairman, Hon. Amadin Enabulele, emphasized that the dissolution and reconstitution of the associations were necessary to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
He noted that several previous board members were inactive, with some residing outside the country and making little to no contributions to their associations.
Hon. Enabulele stated that the selection process prioritized individuals with a proven track record in sports development in Edo State. He urged the new chairmen and members to leverage their experience in discovering and nurturing talent.
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of securing sponsorship to ensure the sustainability of their respective sports associations, stressing that funding is vital for success.
“As a leader or chairman, you must be available to promptly address concerns, guide athletes, liaise with coaches, and foster a culture of teamwork within your association,” Enabulele remarked.
He also announced the introduction of quarterly appraisal meetings between the executive board and association chairmen to assess progress, discuss challenges, and strategize for continued success.
Speaking after the inauguration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, the Executive Director of Sports Development and Operations, Mrs. Sabina Chikere, reinforced the commission’s commitment to accelerating sports development in Edo State.
She stated that the new leadership has been tasked with ensuring smooth operations within their associations to elevate Edo sports to a global standard. She further called on stakeholders to support Hon. Enabulele’s vision for the state’s sports sector.
Notably, some high-performing chairmen were retained, including Elder Dele Edokpayi (Athletics Association), Mr. Uyi Akpata (Cricket), Dr. Walter Imuodemhe (Hockey), and Mr. Andrew Momodu (Golf). Additionally, Chief Osadolor Ogiefa was inaugurated as the Chairman of the Boxing Association.
With these strategic appointments, the Edo State Sports Commission is set on a path to revitalizing sports and grooming world-class athletes for national and international competitions.
