The National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) convened a strategic meeting on Tuesday to develop a plan for the Super Eagles to revive their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, despite their current precarious position.
To get back on track, the Super Eagles—still searching for their first win—must secure victory against table-toppers Rwanda in an away fixture on Matchday 5.
As part of their efforts, the NFF appointed a foreign coach, Eric Chelle, in January 2025 to lead the team for their next six World Cup qualifying matches.
Currently, Nigeria sits in fifth place in the group with three points from four games, while Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin Republic are tied at the top with seven points each. Lesotho follows in fourth place with five points.
Chairman of the NSC, Shehu Dikko, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to supporting the Super Eagles in securing the group’s sole qualification ticket.
In a post on his official Facebook page, he shared updates from his meeting with NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, held at the NSC headquarters.
“Our discussions centered on preparations for the crucial World Cup qualifiers in March 2025, ensuring the Super Eagles get their qualification campaign back on track, and resolving all outstanding issues affecting the team.
We also explored special motivation strategies, international sports diplomacy, and the upcoming FIFA Forward Projects in Nigeria,” Dikko stated.
He further emphasized the NSC’s dedication to working closely with the NFF and other sports federations to achieve their objectives and ensure the success of Nigerian football.
