As Season Seven kicks off this month across 24 centers in Bayelsa’s eight local government areas, featuring male, female, and para categories, Mr. Akpe highlighted the governor’s pivotal role in creating opportunities for young athletes to launch professional sports careers.
Governor Diri’s direct involvement has inspired the Central Organizing Committee (COC) to elevate their efforts, implementing a structured local government stage where all players—regardless of their team’s progression—have the chance to be scouted by international talent hunters.
This year’s tournament brings notable enhancements, including increased prize money with ₦1 million for local government champions and ₦500,000 for runners-up. Additionally, standout players from the LGA finals will form select teams for the second round, with an MVP award introduced for every match to recognize individual excellence.
With registration ongoing, Mr. Akpe expressed optimism about expanding international opportunities for players. Following the success of five players from previous editions who are set to travel to Turkey, Malta, and Lithuania, the organizers aim to secure contracts for over ten players with European clubs by the tournament’s conclusion.
Beyond the pitch, Mr. Akpe highlighted the tournament’s broader impact, including improved security across Bayelsa, as confirmed by law enforcement agencies. He also revealed ongoing discussions with La Liga to establish a partnership for training local coaches, enhancing technical expertise, and boosting the Prosperity Cup’s international profile.
Reinforcing its commitment to grassroots development, the tournament continues to support over 250 teams annually with essential resources, including jerseys, training kits, and match balls, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of youth sports in Nigeria.
