David Ekpeyong Returns As Nigeria Faces South Africa in Davis Cup World Group II Playoffs

After a year-long absence from competitive tennis, Nigeria’s David Ekpeyong is set to make his much-anticipated return as Nigeria battles South Africa in the Davis Cup World Group II Playoffs, kicking off today, February 1, 2025.

The tie will be held at the Groenkloof Tennis Stadium in Pretoria over two days—Saturday, February 1, and Sunday, February 2—featuring a total of five matches: four Singles and one Doubles encounter.

The action begins with South Africa’s top-ranked player, Philip Henning, facing Nigeria’s second-ranked David Ekpeyong. Following that, Nigeria’s number one, Christopher Bulus, will clash with South Africa’s Kris van Wyk in the second Singles match.

Sunday’s reverse Singles fixtures will see Bulus take on Henning, while Ekpeyong will battle van Wyk. The Doubles match will feature Nigeria’s Canice Abua and Michael Emmanuel squaring off against South Africa’s Alec Beckley and Leo Matthysen.

The draw for the tie was officially conducted at a ceremony held at the Garden Field Hotel, Hatfield, with ITF officials, players, coaches, and representatives from both nations in attendance.

Matches are scheduled to start at 11:00 AM South African time (10:00 AM Nigerian time) on Saturday, promising an exciting weekend of high-stakes tennis as both nations vie for a spot in the next round.
