OOU Secures N500m Professorial Endowment in Ophthalmology, Set to Establish Eye Health Institute

Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, has received a N500 million endowment to establish a Professorial Chair in Ophthalmology, marking a significant milestone in its academic and research pursuits.

Announcing this during the university’s 34th Convocation Ceremony for the 2023/2024 academic session, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ayodeji Agboola revealed that the donation was made by renowned ophthalmic surgeon and Chief Medical Director of Eye Foundation Hospital Group, Dr. Adekunle Olubola Hassan.

In addition to the professorial endowment, Dr. Hassan will also contribute another N500 million towards establishing an Institute of Eye Health at the university. He is set to receive an honorary doctorate at the convocation’s grand finale.

Prof. Agboola emphasized the crucial role of philanthropy in advancing OOU’s mission, noting that donations from individuals and alumni have enhanced research, improved infrastructure, and provided scholarship opportunities.

Furthermore, the Vice-Chancellor announced that a new Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Engineering Centre will soon be developed on the Main Campus. The project, spearheaded by OOU alumnus and CEO of Nord Automobiles Limited, Joshua Oluwatobi Ajayi, aims to equip students with engineering, business, and innovation skills for future career opportunities.

Highlighting the university’s recent achievements under his administration’s 3Es mantra—Education, Employability, and Entrepreneurship—Prof. Agboola congratulated the 6,209 graduating students, commending them for their dedication and promising a bright future ahead.
