Abia Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh Reconciles With Assaulted Bolt Driver, Says They’re Now Friends

Alex Ikwechegh, the lawmaker representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has revealed that he has reconciled with Stephen Abuwatseya, the Bolt driver he was seen assaulting in a viral video last year.

Speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Ikwechegh described the incident as his “lowest moment” but noted that it has led to a positive outcome.

The lawmaker, who had been widely criticized for slapping and insulting the driver for allegedly disrespecting him, apologized for his actions and pursued alternative methods to resolve the conflict.

Reflecting on the matter, Ikwechegh said, “What happened was quite unfortunate, but I see it as an opportunity to build a relationship with the young man. Today, we are friends. The case went to court, but it was dismissed for lack of merit.”

He added that the incident does not reflect his true character and expressed gratitude for the new relationships formed through the experience. “I’m now very close to his pastor and have gained new friends. Nigerians know me better now, and we’ve all moved on from the past,” he concluded.
