Sofiat Obanishola Sets Sights on Defending Title, Boosting World Ranking, and Olympic Dream in 2025

National Women’s Badminton Champion, Sofiat Obanishola, has outlined her key objectives for the 2025 badminton season, emphasizing her commitment to defending her national title, enhancing her global standing, and bringing more accolades to Nigeria.

“My primary focus for 2025 is to retain my national women’s champion title while expanding my reach by competing in more international tournaments,” she shared.

“I’m determined to improve my world ranking and secure additional medals for my country.”

Reflecting on her achievements, Obanishola described her pride in holding the national title. “Being the national women’s champion is an indescribable honor—a blend of pride, joy, and accomplishment.

It symbolizes my hard work and motivates me to push further and achieve excellence,” she said.

The 2024 season marked a pivotal point in her career, with Obanishola attributing her success to relentless effort and determination.

She also reminisced about winning a bronze medal at the 2023 African Games in Ghana during her university days, calling it a milestone moment.

“Winning a bronze medal while still in school was an unforgettable experience. Now that I’ve graduated, I can dedicate more time to training, refining my skills, and gaining a competitive edge,” she noted.

Looking ahead, Obanishola revealed her long-term goal of competing at the 2028 Olympic Games. “The Olympics are definitely on my radar. Although it’s a few years away, I’m already laying the groundwork to make my debut.

With consistent training, dedication, and support, I’m confident in my ability to represent Nigeria on the global stage,” she said.

Obanishola confirmed her participation in the National Sports Festival in Ogun State, where she will represent Delta State.

“It’s an honor to compete for Delta State at the National Sports Festival. I’m excited to challenge myself against top athletes and make my state proud.”

She is also set to compete at the 2025 All Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Douala, Cameroon, in February.
