Olopade Hails Nigeria U19 Women’s Cricket Team As They Defeat New Zealand in Historic ICC U19 World Cup Upset

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has hailed the Nigeria U19 Women’s Cricket Team for their remarkable two-run victory over New Zealand in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia.

The Nigerian team, known as the Junior Female Yellow Greens, stunned the cricket world by overcoming one of the tournament’s top favorites in a thrilling match that was delayed for two hours due to heavy rainfall.

Expressing his excitement, Olopade called the win “historic,” highlighting the resilience and patriotism displayed by the team, which secured one of the sport’s most significant upsets.

He also acknowledged the contributions of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, led by President Uyi Akpata, for raising the sport’s standards in the country. Olopade assured that the National Sports Commission, under the leadership of Mallam Shehu Dikko, would continue to support the Federation.

The DG encouraged the players to remain focused, urging them not to become complacent but to view the victory as a stepping stone to even greater accomplishments.

With this victory, Nigeria tops Group C in the ICC Women’s U19 World Cup 2025, positioning themselves as strong contenders in the tournament.
