Despite their dominance, Osun United struggled to break down ABS FC’s resolute defense in the first half, as the Saraki Army’s low-block strategy held firm.
Seye Ajayi’s men continued to push forward after the break, making tactical adjustments to revitalize their attack. Their efforts paid off in the 67th minute when Robiu Olateju was fouled in the box, earning a penalty for the home side.
Ganiyu Gberefun, in scintillating form this season, stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to claim his fifth goal of the campaign.
The goal gave Osun United the upper hand, allowing them to control the game’s tempo. ABS FC pushed for an equalizer but found it difficult to break through the solid defensive pairing of Paul Agbor and Lekan Gabriel.
A late chance for the Ilorin-based side went begging, leaving them frustrated as the final whistle confirmed a hard-earned victory for the Imole Boys.
The win moves Osun United to the top of the table on goal difference. With Gberefun’s decisive penalty highlighting his importance to the team, the Imole Gladiators will aim to maintain their momentum as they face Godswill Akpabio FC in Uyo next weekend in a Week 7 encounter.
