A board member of Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), Segun Oshinaike has opined emphatically that sports talents need education to excel, Sports247 reports.
Speaking against the background of many football academies having enrolled to feature in this year’s Lagos State FA Cup, Oshinaike reckoned that the competition will be graced by many young players who are still students.

Oshinaike, who is also the tutor-general permanent secretary of Lagos State Education District 4, noted: “Looking at education and sports, you will see that there is a sort of interwoven relationship. This is in the sense of the fact that, for you to be an excellent player, you need to be intelligent.
Education will be an asset because you need to know what it takes to sign a contract. You need to know the rules and regulations that guide whatever game you are into. So, it is pertinent for any student who wants to go into sports to be versatile with education.
Also, for you to be a good sportsman, you must be able to read, understand and interpret what the rules of the game are.”
Oshinaike went on to buttress his view with other aspects of sports where a good education would come in handy, especially as he noted that everything in life revolves around getting a good foundation for the future.
“In a nutshell, education and sports cannot be disintegrated. There is need for a good sportsman to be well-versed in education; and education is the bedrock of any development.
“As an individual in a nation, it is pertinent for one to be enriched with such useful values that accrue from being educated,” Oshinaike concluded.
